Virtual Historical Tour - Old City Hall

The City of Sterling purchased the lots on which the building is situated in 1909 for $2500.00. The building was designed in 1913 by the same architect who built the Logan County Courthouse, John J. Huddart. The contractor was William Kaepernik of Sterling. The building is located at 214 Poplar Street in Sterling. At the time it was built, it cost $13,208. The City sold two lots which was part of the space occupied by the Logan County Court House to finance the construction of the city hall.

Old City HallThe building is a buff brick building with contrasting brick used for corner quoins and to further accentuate the facade. The first floor has a double door that was used for the entrance for fire trucks. The door has the contrasting brick surround with a keystone at the apex of the arch. The arch is repeated in the remaining window of the first floor. That window is a three part single-hung sash with muntins in the top portion of the window. A concrete sill course runs from the door under the window and around the side of the building. The entry door has an arched drip mold and curved fan light over the door. The second story windows have the same muntin pattern as the first story, but these windows are topped with voussoirs and appear to be double hung. The center window has an architrave trim and a double window divided by a mullion.

Old City HallThe first floor of the building was the fire department, clerk's office and the jail. The fire department quarters were very modern for the time, consisting of a gym, library and reading rooms. The second floor consisted of the Mayor's office, council chambers and other city offices.

The building was used as Sterling's City Hall and Fire Station until 1976. It currently houses the law offices of Arnold, Ross and Associates and the Navy Recruiter. This building is eligible for the National Register. Visitors are welcome during regular business hours.
