Virtual Historical Tour - William S. Hadfield Home

This was the last home owned by William S. Hadfield and his wife, Charity. It is located at 402 South 2nd Street.

Hadfield HomeThe Hadfield Home is a frame building with a cross-gabled and hipped roof and wrapped porch with hipped roof. There is a wrought iron widows walk on top of the roof. Originally the house was wood clapboard siding with shingle siding in a scalloped pattern at the apex of the side gables. The large double hung windows must have allowed for a substantial amount of natural light to enter the house. Unfortunately, not much remains of the original historic appearance of the house. Recent renovations have led to the application of a stone and stucco material on the exterior of the house and addition of spindled porch rails that were not original to the house that dramatically alter its appearance.

Hadfield HomeNote the "widow's walk" on the roof. The house was probably built around 1905-1910. Mr. Hadfield is known as the first permanent white settler in Logan County. His first home was on an island in the South Platte River. A second home was later built around Peetz, Colorado. Mr. Hadfield came from England. He was a rancher and businessman and community leader.

The house has gone through several owners and remodeling over the years. In the late 1980's, the current (2001) owners, David and Vickie Tennant, constructed an extensive addition to the home and stuccoed the outside walls. Mr. Tennant owns the funeral home across the street from his residence.
