Human Resources


The mission of the Human Resource Department is to support the goals and challenges of the City of Sterling by providing services which promote a work environment that is characterized by consistent and courteous policy application for staff, open communications, personal accountability, trust and mutual respect. We will seek and provide solutions to workplace issues that support and optimize the operating principles of the organization, properly balancing the needs of the employees with the needs of the City of Sterling.

City of Sterling Application Process

How to apply:

An official City of Sterling application form must be received by the City of Sterling, HR Department, by the final filing date. Late applications will not be accepted. Your application must be signed and dated.

Resumes are NOT accepted in lieu of an application. Cover letters, resumes, and training certificates can be attached to the application. Applications will only be accepted for positions that are posted and open. No unsolicited applications will be accepted.

Notifications of open positions are advertised:

  • Colorado Workforce Center, 100 College Ave, NJC, Sterling, CO
  • www.sterlingcolo.com
  • Information Desk, 421 N. 4th St., Sterling, CO
  • Local newspapers, usually advertised on Wednesday
  • Certain positions may be advertised on other sites such as: Denver Post, CML Job Finder, and/or industry specific publications

Obtain an application by:

  • Downloading the City of Sterling employment application for the position you wish to apply for
  • You may stop by the Information Desk at City Hall, 421 N. 4th St. between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday
  • Or call 970-522-9700 to have an application mailed to you

After your application has been received, it will be logged. Many positions are advertised with a closing date. Applications received after the closing date will not be considered.

After the closing date, the applications will be forwarded to the hiring department for review.

NOTE: All employees of the City of Sterling hired after November 6, 1986 are required to provide proof of their identity and eligibility for employment within the United States of America. This may be done in a variety of ways, but the most common method is by producing a Colorado’s Driver’s License and an original birth certificate or Social Security card. There are other methods that may be used and any applicant interested in this may contact the HR Department at any time for this information.

The City of Sterling participates in the E-Verify program and Social Security Verification program. Fulltime positions and some part-time positions  require a background check and pre-employment substance abuse screening.

Drug screen and background investigations

The City of Sterling conducts a background investigation of applicants for all positions except Seasonal and Temporary positions. The investigation may include, but is not limited to:

  • checking arrest and/or criminal conviction records
  • driving records
  • credit history
  • previous employment

The City may, in its discretion, make selection and retention decisions based upon the information obtained in connected with a background investigation.

Pre-employment drug screen is also conducted for all positions except Seasonal and Temporary positions. CDL Driver’s License holder requires a Department of Transportation pre-employment drug screen.
