Human Resources

The mission of the Human Resource Department is to support the goals and challenges of the City of Sterling by providing services which promote a work environment that is characterized by consistent and courteous policy application for staff, open communications, personal accountability, trust and mutual respect. We will seek and provide solutions to workplace issues that support and optimize the operating principles of the organization, properly balancing the needs of the employees with the needs of the City of Sterling.

City of Sterling Application Process

All applications will be accepted ONLINE only. The process will require a username and password that applicant will need to provide.

If the applicant does not have access to a computer, the Sterling Public Library can be used. The applicant will need to check with the Library to schedule the computer use. The Library’s phone number is 970-522-2023. CO Workforce Center, located in Walker Hall at Northeastern Jr. College, also will have computer access for applicant’s to use.

Open positions will be advertised at the following locations or in the following publications:

    • Colorado Workforce Center, 100 College Ave, NJC, Sterling, CO
  • www.sterlingcolo.com
  • Lobby at City Hall
  • Local newspapers, usually advertised on Wednesday
  • Certain positions may be advertised on other sites such as: Denver Post, CML Job Finder, and/or industry specific publications


Most positions are advertised with a closing date. Applications received after the closing date will not be considered.

After the closing date, the applications will be forwarded to the hiring department for review.

NOTE: All employees of the City of Sterling hired after November 6, 1986 are required to provide proof of their identity and eligibility for employment within the United States of America. This may be done in a variety of ways, but the most common method is by producing a Colorado’s Driver’s License and an original birth certificate or Social Security card. There are other methods that may be used and any applicant interested in this may contact the HR Department at any time for this information.

The City of Sterling participates in the E-Verify program. Fulltime positions and some part-time positions  require a background check and pre-employment substance abuse screening.

Drug screen and background investigations

The City of Sterling conducts a background investigation of applicants for all positions. (Seasonal and Temporary applicants that possibly would drive may also be included in the Motor Vehicle Record Review.) The investigation may include, but is not limited to:

    • checking arrest and/or criminal conviction records
    • driving records
    • education
  • previous employment

The City may, in its discretion, make selection and retention decisions based upon the information obtained in connected with a background investigation.

Pre-employment drug screen is also conducted for all positions. This may include Seasonal and Temporary positions. CDL Driver’s License holder requires a Department of Transportation pre-employment drug screen.
